"I get A's, why should I go to the Writing Center?" It never hurts to have another set of eyes take a look at your paper. Our consultants can serve as a sounding board for you to bounce ideas off of, or they may present counter ideas that challenge your own and help you to strengthen your paper in a variety of ways.
"How often can I come?" You can come as often as you need to! There is no limit on how may times you can visit.
"Why peer consultants?" At the Writing Center we seek to provide a friendly and inviting atmosphere while also providing high quality services to clients. By employing peer consultants we can do just that. Our consultants are in the same classes as you, they know and understand the struggles you are going through and have also received additional training on how to work with you to advance your work.
"What should I bring?" In order to get the best out of your visit, we recommend that you bring: - Your assignment and/or your writing goals - Paper or a laptop to take notes or revise a draft - An idea of what you would like to specifically address during the session
"Do I need to bring a draft?" Not necessarily. If you want quality feedback on the contents in your draft, then it is in your best interest to bring that draft so that the consultant may take a closer look. However, if, for example, you are in the preliminary stage of your assignment then you may not yet have a draft, but we can help you get started on one. We can help you at any stage in the writing process, and we are here to help you, so bring whatever you think will help you to get the most out of your session.
"Can I drop off a paper?" At the Writing Center we encourage conversation between consultant and client to help facilitate communication between writer and reader. For this reason, we ask that you stay and work withus rather thandrop off papers for us to "edit." We want you to retain control as the author.
"Can consultants help with research/citations?" Absolutely! We have a plethora of sources and style guides in the WC to help you with citations and research. We also work closely with Shipman librarians and can refer to them as needed.
"Do I have to make an appointment?" Appointments are not required; we are a drop-in service. However, we do offer the possibility of appoinments, if you would like guaranteed contact with a certain consultant or at a specific time. To schedule an appointment, stop in or contact us by email at writingcenter@adrian.edu. "Is there a cost?" No, the Writing Center is completely free!
